August 10 playlist

Hello - here is the playlist for tonight's show. We featured music by Oren Lavie, whose album "The Opposite Side of the Sea" came out in 2007, but only for downloading. It is finally getting released as a CD this year. Why the sudden boost in profile? It may have something to do with this very clever video which has been passed around like mad on the web. The rest of the album is pretty sweet too - have a listen and let me know what you think!

Irene Atman - Simple Life
Oren Lavie - Her Morning Elegance
Taylor Hicks - What's Right Is Right
Jose Gonzalez - Hand On Your Heart
Angus & Julie Stone - Mango Tree

August 3 playlist

Here are the track lists from tonight's show (a repeat of our first ever Simple City mix):

Richard Page - A Simple Life
This is the original of a song John Farnham covered, although you'd be forgiven for not knowing that if you're not Australian. My wife is, and I heard it on an old, old tape she brought back from home. It might have been the tune, or the lyric "Somebody show me how to get back to the simple life" which grabbed my attention - that seems to be my theme at the moment... One of the reasons for this show having its name.

Featured Artist this week: Yael Naim - New Soul
Apple just make stuff cool. If we were bigger, that might make them want to give me a MacAir, but we're not, so it won't. I'll settle for looking at them. This is the tune from the ad.

The Moldy Peaches - Anyone Else But You
From the film Juno, which has a compelling story and a beautiful soundtrack to match. We might come back and feature more songs from it soon

Barefoot - White Lines
One of my favourite chilled covers, and one of the most requested. I need to warn you now that I have an unhealthy obsession with finding interesting cover versions, and if you listen to this show you will probably hear a lot of them. Suggestions for more are always welcome - you could really make my week if you point me towards a good one!

Eels - Marie Floating Over The Backyard
Did you remember Eels as a chillout group? I bet you didn't.

Yael Naim - Far Far
OK, some more non-Apple related info about Yael Naim. She was born in France, but has lived most of her life in Israel. She sings in a mixture of French, English and Hebrew - so I reckon she could do pretty well in Eurovision. But France already has someone cool entering this year, don't they? Oh, I just read that Apple gave this tune away free on iTunes - can't get away from them, then. iPods are cool! And I don't have one.

Jose Gonzales - Heartbeats
It felt like a good time to play a big fave...

Goldfrapp - Clowns
Opening track from the splendid "Seventh Tree" album. I love Goldfrapp in chillout mode. It's why I really liked them to start with. We had constant arguments in the office about whether their last album sounded more like Madonna or Rachel Stevens. The songs, not the voice. I'd better not write any more about that, because Alison G. lives in Bath, which is very close... And we do love her!

Kate Rogers - Sail
She was excellent The Big Chill

Yael Naim - Paris
Anyway, more about Yael. She has an early album around from 2001 called "In A Man's Womb", and it's become my latest mission to track down a copy. When I do, we'll hopefully find songs for playing on this show.

The Beauty Room - Holding On
The legend Pete Lawrence introduced me to these guys...

Future Loop Foundation - Sunshine Philosophy - Pete Lawrence remix
... which reminded me to play this. Pete has actually managed to capture the sensation of a summer's day in rural England throughout this tune. I can see cricket and want a cider in my hand when I listen to the intro and outro...

Joby Talbot - Seed Capsule
Chiller Cabinet's Ben Eshmade introduced me to the amazing soundtracks of Joby Talbot, who used to be in Divine Comedy with singer Neil Hannon. He was also the first resident composer for Classic FM, and this is one of the tracks he wrote for them.

Yael Naim - Toxic
I did warn you about the cover versions... Yes, it's THAT song...

Tom Baxter - Skybound
Saw him delight what looks convincingly like a cult fanbase in Bristol a couple of weeks ago. He can be a bit of a highly wound artiste (he had a real go at the sound guy at one point, but quickly repented as he remembered he was playing inside a boat with questionable acoustics...) but the price of genius is usually a bit of eccentricity. Tom has both, by the bucket.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Isle Of View (Music For Helicopter Pilots)
I just love the title. Actually a good tune too!

"Special Mix Thing" - need to think of a title for this feature...
We started Chill as a demo compilation. Making mix tapes is something I've done forever, and the idea of Chill was to play the kind of music we'd always been used to swapping on tapes to help each other chill. Every week at 11pm I'm going to play a mix for a listener - quite possibly you, if you ask for one. Just let me know what's going on with you, maybe there's something getting you stressed, and I'll try and help you chill with some suitable songs. This week I did this mix for a friend who had a bad experience with lurve - this is my "breakup mix" for them:

Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (Acoustic Late Night mix)
Randy Newman - I Think It's Gonna Rain Today
Duffy - Warwick Avenue
Corinne Bailey Rae - Seasons Change
KT Tunstall - Heal Over
Jonatha Brooke - After The Tears
Will Young - Letting In The Sunshine (from the Mrs Henderson Presents soundtrack)

Did I mention you can ask me to make a mix for you? Just email me - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Nerina Pallot - Sophia
The lovely original version from the first version of her "Fires" album, not the pop version with the burning piano video. Horrible waste of a piano!

Leo Abrahams - Honeytrap
Another top tip from Chiller Cabinet Ben - if you liked it, you should really try his show on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Scott Matthews - Elusive
This song won awards, apparently. Not Brit Awards for chart massiveness (it only got to number 56 in the singles chart, and his album never made the top 40), but cool Ivor Novello songwriting awards for being good. I would highly recommend you hunt down a copy of "Passing Stranger".

Tunng - Beautiful And Light
I think these lads are the musical equivalent of a Coen brothers film - dark, disturbing, but somehow funny and a bit of a guilty pleasure. They also have a unique way with percussion. Are Elbow nicking tricks from them?

Emiliana Torrini - Sunny Road
I thought the mix needed a bit of brightening at this point. Yay - sunshine!

Gustavo Santaolalla - Opening
From Brokeback Mountain. It just seemed to fit after the last tune, and the irony of the title amused me at this point in the show.

Lou Rhodes - All We Are
"Cause heaven brought us here to love with all we are." Couldn't have put it better.

I'd love to hear what you thought of the tunes, and what you would like to hear next week. Just email me - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Cheers,
Bern
